Most people visit Tulum, Mexico, as a side trip from Cancun, but have you ever considered doing it the other way around?  Here are the Cancun sights you should be sure to visit.

The most important thing to see in Cancun is the beach. Sure, it may be a bit more crowded than that in Tulum, but Cancun’s beaches are more glamorous. It’s a great place to people watch and to admire the renowned natural beauty.

If you’ve made it as far as the beach, why not go all the way into the water? That beautiful turquoise water is as warm as bath water and heavenly to splash in. If you have children with you, head to the more sheltered north coast. If you feel more adventurous, head south for some serious body surfing. If you are traveling with children, be aware that some beaches permit topless sunbathing by women.

One interesting water attraction is the underwater museum with more than 400 sculptures inhabited by sea life. It’s popular for scuba divers and snorkelers. If you don’t do either, you can still sea the sculptures via a glass-bottomed boat tour.

Another important Cancun attraction is the Kulkulkan Plaza, a shopping destination with 250 stores to explore, offering everything from designer clothing to jewelry to real Mexican crafts and artifacts.  To continue the shopping experience, check out the wares of the many street vendors.

Even if you are in Cancun for a day trip from Tulum, you’ll want to visit the hotel zone. It’s great for reveling in luxury. There are countless spas and resorts in which to get pampered. You’ll feel like a celebrity with all the staff working to entice you indoors. The restaurants offer all sorts of delectable eats – you need to be careful or you won’t fit into the swimsuit you brought.

Does Cancun ever close? No, but there are certainly better times to visit than others. Most travel experts recommend visiting in early summer. That way, you’ll avoid the crush of U.S. students on their spring break from classes and the potential devastation of hurricane season. If you don’t mind crowds, consider experiencing Carnival in February or during the International Marathon in December.

The temperature is hot and humid year round and thus Cancun is more crowded when North Americans are trying to escape winter snow and cold.  The average temperature is 80 degrees F (27.1 degrees C) and a sea breeze keeps the afternoon heat down. Cancun gets rain about 115 days per year. The best weather is from November to February

Cancun is worth a visit, even as a daytrip from Tulum. It’s only a two hour drive away but a whole different world. Visit and then come back to the quieter world of Tulum.
